Gadhimai festival starts:

Drop expected in sacrifices

Gadhimai Festival

KATHMANDU, Nepal – The animal sacrifice during Gadhimai festival, reportedly the largest religious slaughter in the world, will see a significant decline this year, according to government officials.

The festival, which formally begins on Monday, will continue for 15 days and the sacrificial ritual is carried out on November 28 and 29.
Officials claimed that the Indian Supreme Court order to some states to restrict animal export would lower the number of animals brought across the border.

Last month, the apex court of India issued an interim order to the Union of India and state governments of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal—from where a majority of the animals are transported—to check the animal outflow.
Organisers say almost 70 percent of a quarter of a million animals sacrificed during the festival are brought from the Indian states.

How to Protect Yourself From Expired and Repackaged Meat

On my way to CTV Ottawa's Morning show, I quipped that I should check the headlines to be sure chicken wasn't in the news. I was going to talk about how to economically cut up a whole chicken to save money and time but raw chicken is normally not something you see on TV. It just isn't. There is an ick factor even though it is Canada's #1 source of protein and most of consume it upwards of three times per week.

4 Fresh Sermon Topics for the Christmas Season

Some people think the Christmas verses are the stuff of Christmas pageants and cheesy dramas. They are also fuel for great preaching

What we know of the birth of Jesus comes to us as divine revelation in the inspired words of the gospels. The Christmas story comes from the scriptures. These passages are some of the most well-known Bible verses in history.

MUST READ: Genius Things To Make With Your Leftovers‏

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but that doesn't make eating one any easier. The difficulty of getting yourself ready for work (or just out of the bed at all) usually means this critical meal gets skipped for more pressing things -- like showers.

2 Reasons Thanksgiving Is Being Forgotten

2 Reasons Thanksgiving Is Being Forgotten

Thanksgiving Day approaches, not much has been in the news about it. There’s been more discussion about the Black Friday sales following Thanksgiving than Thanksgiving Day itself! Is this American national holiday not important anymore? Why is Thanksgiving being forgotten?

When Thanksgiving first became a national holiday in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln called it “a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.”
President Lincoln’s proclamation also said: “The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added … [by] the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.”

Just How Green Will Electricity Production Be In 2050?‏

This story originally appeared on Climate Central.

Clues to the United States’ energy future are everywhere, if you know where to look.
By 2050, the technology will likely be available to provide 80 percent of the country’s electricity from wind, solar and other renewable sources.
But even if the nation doesn’t adapt to that degree, it is clear that the way Americans get their electricity and how it’s generated will be vastly different than today, toppling the current model of power flowing in one direction, from major power plants into American homes.

Hangout With Big Cat Experts

In reference to his favorite animals—tigers—Ron Tilson once said, “How can you not be fascinated by an animal like that?” Surely, we are all fascinated by the iconic tiger—the world’s largest cat and Asia’s most dominant, yet endangered predator.

We are also fascinated by hard-working field biologists like Ron who have dedicated their lives to the study and conservation of elusive and imperiled wildlife species like Javan rhinos, Sumatran tigers and Kloss gibbons.
Despite Ron’s dedication to saving the great cat, the living subspecies of the tiger, and most notably, the Sumatran tiger, could easily disappear in our lifetime.

12 More Mind-Blowing Documentaries You Can Stream Right Now

"Crazy Love"Dan Klores doesn't do anything especially innovative with his 2007 documentary. The talking heads format he employs was one of the biggest criticisms upon release. Although, anything else might have distracted from the already overwhelming subjects of "Crazy Love." Before and (somehow) after he threw acid in her face, Burt Pugach and Linda Riss participated in what is easily one of the most absurd love stories of the 20th century. If their relationship wasn't documented across various newspapers and court documents, it would seem too over-the-top for even a daytime soap.

Yes, It's Possible To Be Both An Introvert And An Extravert

COCKTAIL PARTY WOMAN RED WINE

We love to proudly label ourselves as introverts or extraverts. If the Internet has anything to say about it, introverts particularly enjoy categorizing themselves as such and connecting with fellow introverts (virtually, not in person of course) over their mutual distaste for parties and small talk.

But in reality, few of us fit neatly into either of these personality types. And for those of us who are truly in the middle of the introversion/extraversion spectrum, there's a name, too. Psychologists refer to such people as ambiverts, meaning that we express qualities and behaviors of both introverts and extraverts, depending on the situation.

Discovery Of Vast Buried

Discovery Of Vast Buried Canyon Has Scientists Buzzing

Researchers have made a surprising discovery in Tibet, unearthing an ancient canyon buried deep under sediment along the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the southern part of the country.

The canyon is thousands of feet deep in some places and is believed to have been carved by a river three million to seven million years ago.
"I was extremely surprised," Dr. Jean-Philippe Avouac, professor of geology at Caltech in Pasadena, Calif. and one of the researchers, said in a written statement. "When I first saw the data, I said, 'Wow!' It was amazing to see that the river once cut quite deeply into the Tibetan Plateau because it does not today. That was a big discovery."

Buffalo Residents Ready For Possible Evacuations

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Fears of disastrous flooding from a rapid meltdown of the Buffalo area's 7 feet of snow eased on Monday, but high winds became a menace, threatening to knock down trees and power lines.

Forecasters, meanwhile, defended the National Weather Service following criticism from Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who accused the agency of failing to anticipate how bad Buffalo's epic snowstorm would be.

Why In The World Is It Called A Moscow Mule, Anyway?

Moscow mule

There’s a lot of murkiness surrounding the origins of our favorite cocktails -- probably because booze are always involved, which has the tendency to make our memories foggy. But there are some stories that are generally held to be true, and that is the kind of story we’re going to be telling today about the Moscow Mule

Embodied Symbols of the South Seas

Introduction to Polynesia

The Pacific Ocean covers one-third of the planet and washes the shores of numerous island chains, including Polynesia that literally means “many islands.” Roughly speaking, the geographical area of Polynesia forms a nearly perfect triangle defined by Hawaii at the northern tip supported by its two bases: New Zealand at the western edge and Easter Island at the eastern boundary.

Pinctada maxima

Pearls produce by cultured South Sea pearls are also among the largest cultured pearls produced in the world, ranging in size from 9-20 mm, and an average size of around 13 mm. Among the reasons adduced for the growth of such large pearls are :- 1) the large size of the oyster 2) the large size of the implanted bead 3) the conducive environment in which the oyster grows 4) the long growth period of the oyster.

The larger size of the oyster enables the growth of a larger pearl, as well the acceptance of a larger bead. Besides the presence of a larger gonad, where the bead is usually implanted, enables a faster deposition of nacre around the nucleus, in the warm conditions of the sea, that enhances the metabolism of the oyster. South Sea pearls are harvested only after a minimum period of two years, which allows the pearls to grow to a much larger size.
